VIRTUAL ALTAR
Welcome to the Virtual Altar. This is the "underworld", where all the ofrendas are sacredly held, calling to the spirits of loved ones. Join us as we celebrate the joy of life and greet the commemorated souls with gladness. Created by the patrons of The Día de Los Muertos Collective, alongside the ofrendas at Artscape Wychwood Barns, Toronto, Canada.
Nuestra ofrenda está dedicada a las personas que queremos y que dejaron este mundo.

We are honouring our father: Mauricio Murrieta a professor and a musician, he will spend hours playing jazz and listening to classic music, combining art an education. An inspiration of perseverance for his family and a creative of curated unforgettable jokes, you couldn’t spend 1 minute with him without laughing out loud.
We miss you everyday, welcome back.

Antonio y Blanca Delia son los ángeles que Dios me dió por padres. Fueron unos padres maravillosos. Los amo y agradezco infinitamente el tiempo que los tuve conmigo.
Antonio and Blanca Delia are the angels that God gave me as parents. They were loving and kind... amazing. I love them and I am grateful beyond words for the time I had with them.

My grandpa. He was like the my dad I looked up to him. I looked forward to waiting for him to come home from work with a surprise for my sister and I. He was always there when it mattered the most. I loved watching the dodgers play with him or see him play solitaire every day in his same spot.

Billy danced back across the rainbow bridge this summer. Under the sparkle and fire of the comet, he surrendered his physical body back to the Mother. Smile and laugh for the joy of having walked beside him. Cry and howl for the loss of the solid forehead to kiss. Rest peaceful knowing he now kisses us all, with every sunbeam and wind gust and rain shower and shooting star. Always all ways grateful to love him and be loved by him. Sweet moon, bathe my cracked heart in your healing light, and tell him I know he is there with you. Grateful, beloved. Xxxooo

A Mexican altar goes beyond celebrating death. It's remembering, honoring and thanking all those loved ones who are no longer with us but who will always be in our hearts.

In this altar I am hororing my grandparents, and aunties-grandmothers who I grew up with; one grandma who passed on 2021 without a proper funeral due covid restrictions. With this altar I honor some people I set up good bounds in Canada, a sweet woman who I met when I was new to Canada and became a good friend, and 2 elders first nation who I admired and taught me about their original "canadian culture" one was called the aztec dance group abuelita: grandma Geraldine. My friend Carson Norton took his life December 25, 2021. He was so funny and kind and loving, he had a rough outer shell but if you got to know him, he was one of the sweetest people you would ever meet. He taught me to be more accepting and loving.

This year, I am honouring my sweet grandmother, mommy-joon, Pari Hedayati-Hakimian. We had a very special weekly ritual which consisted of Saturday morning visits to her apartment. She would often break out into song, snapping her fingers and bouncing her shoulders, performing for us. She would serve up countless cups of hot chaye with sweets, fresh fruits and nuts, as well as each of our favourite foods spread across her tiny little dining table for family lunch. She regularly gave a small allowance to my sister and I, usually between $5-$10, and would look over to my father asking "jaless shodee?" asking if he was jealous of the humble gift. She was one of the few connections to my ancestral culture and she spoke hardly any english after 40 years in Toronto, Canada. Despite her limits with English, she ended every one of our phone calls with "love you, miss you, kiss you". Thinking of you always mommee.

Is the first time I dedicate an altar to my grandma. In this year that is dedicated to women, to warriors.
