DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS 2021
VIRTUAL CELEBRATION
CEREMONY
The Day of the Dead ceremony begins alongside both friends, family and community members as well as with commuters and travelers rushing through the halls of the Oak Room at Union Station, Toronto, Canada.
The remarks of Marie (Women’s Drum Circle Kwewag Nagamowin) during this year's ceremony occurred around the Dia de los Muertos Collective’s public ofrenda/ altar installation, bringing life and remembrance while highlighting the significance of mourning across our communities here on Native Land - Turtle Island. Honoured with the smudging by Maya K’iche Elder Bártolo Alvárez, the altar invites those visiting and traveling to hold a space of care. The First Nations Drum Circle Eagleheart shared their songs while the fancy shawl dancer Otsíkh:èta (Candy Blair) danced around the ofrenda and the arch. The Women’s Drum Circle Kwewag Nagamowin shared theirsongs and was followed by the Aztec Dance Ceremony. As the contemporary music by Tocani, inspired by prehispanic traditions, evoked joy- the celebration concluded with an invitationto share thename of a person, ancestor, or community to honour and add to our public ofrenda.
